You need to complement your face with the right shade of makeup the same way you need to flatter your body type with the right wardrobe.
This is especially true for Filipino women who are known around the world for their diverse and unique beauty. Filipinas are predominantly morena, a Spanish term which means “brown” in complexion, hailing from our Malay ancestors. But due to our country’s history of being colonized by different races, there are also Filipino chinitas from a line of Chinese immigrants, and mestizas with Spanish or American roots.
The difference of Filipinas in complexion, eye-shape, and overall features also presents different needs when it comes to makeup.
To guide you, we’ve listed everyday makeup tips for each Filipina that will surely highlight each of these unique features.
For the mestiza
Being blessed with fair skinned, mestizas have the flexibility to experiment with bright colors on their eyes, cheeks, and lips and at the same time they have the option to go minimal as their skin requires very little coverage. Light BB creams are usually the go-to product of mestizas.
However, if you happen to be a warm-toned mestiza, it’s best to use yellow-based foundation and set it with a slight puff of yellowish loose powder for a flawless matte finish.
Some mestizas also look great with earthy shades like greens, gold, copper, and bronze. Don’t hesitate to play around with these different hues to find out what works for you. Just don’t overdo it by using your whole palette all at once.
For the lips, you can never go wrong with red lipstick. But remember that if you’re going for the sultry look, put on something light on your lips like peach or nudes to really bring out your eyes.
For the chinita
Chinitas usually want to make their peepers appear wider to achieve those irresistible doe eyes. Well-groomed and perfectly arched eyebrows can instantly create this illusion.
But why stop there when you can enhance the effect with the right makeup?
Deep colored eye shadows like purple, navy, and browns work well on chinitas. Instead of contouring the lids, wash the entire lid with your chosen color.
Afterwards, grab a black eyeliner. Anything from pencil, liquid, or gel will do. Apply a thin line on your upper lashes all the way to the outer corners of your eyes. Finish off by applying mascara, and you’ll instantly have wider-looking eyes.
For the round-faced chinita, use a bronzer or a darker shade of foundation to accentuate your cheekbones. Lightly brush from your temples to the areas underneath your cheekbones. Lightly contour your jawline, too, for that structured effect similar to Asian supermodels.
For the morena
For flawless-looking skin, it is important for morenas to use pink-based concealers instead of yellow-tones because these make your skin look grayish. For the blush, note that peach and corals complement dark skin tones best.
Gold, orange, and bronze are of course morena must-haves. Invest in a bronzer with hints of golds for that sun-kissed glow. For the eye shadow, gold and orange tones will surely accentuate your eyes. Top off your eye makeup with eyeliner and mascara to add definition.
Not all of us can be born with flawless white complexion or perfectly sun-kissed skin. In the end, we have to work with what we’re given. With these tips, hopefully you can make the most of your assets and be on your way to feeling beautiful and confident, ready to run the world.
