Just because some people you know are using it in such a way, doesn’t mean it’s right. You might be surprised to find out that you’re actually using some of your makeup items the wrong way. We’ve listed five of the most basic makeup items that can be found on any makeup kit. Find out if you’re committing a mistake, and know how to immediately correct them. It might be time to change your makeup routine.
MISTAKE #1 LIQUID FOUNDATION
As much as you want to cover all marks and dark spots on your face, applying liquid foundation all over is a common mistake. There’s a reason why concealers are made, and this is to cover up imperfections on your face. Unless your liquid foundation is all purpose, meaning it comes with an SPF, can conceal spots and contains vitamins, it’s really not advisable to apply it all over your face. Doing so doesn’t help in contouring. Instead, you might even end up with a dull looking finish without highlighting your assets.
It’s important to put the right amount of foundation in the right place, especially if you want to flaunt that contour. Take a flat-top brush or an egg shaped sponge (for a smoother finish). Stipple around the nose area going to your cheeks, down to the chin. Do the same steps on your forehead, then stipple the excess foundation all over and let it set from 3 to 5 minutes. Puff any powder and blend well for a smoother finish.
MISTAKE #2 LIP LINER
You should be aware by now that lip liners are not mere liners at all. The most common mistake is starting from one corner and dragging the pencil all the way around your lips to meet the point where you started. Learning the proper technique can save those lips from being horribly done. Here`s what you should do: dab a small amount of concealer for a better blend in the entire lips. Then, create an “x” mark on the upper center of your lips. Next, add a dash to the center of your bottom lip directly below the “x” mark. Then, connect the lines for the most even end. There! Perfectly shaped lips without the help of a professional.
MISTAKE #3 MASCARA
Hate the bend in your wand? It actually helps! The main purpose of the bend is to carefully curl and brush the lashes in the center while gently lifting up the edges. So rather than holding the curve towards your eye, hold the wand so the bend faces up. Your lashes will perfectly sit on the bend and the wand will do all the work. No built-in bend on your wand? Do it yourself! It’s easy. Take a napkin and bend your wand. Usually, wands are made of soft plastic so they won’t snap. Also, once your mascara tube dries up, don’t pour water in it. Use eye drop instead of plain water since water causes mascara to flake or smudge.
MISTAKE #4 EYEBROW PENCIL
Unfortunately, not all of us are born with full, shapely eyebrows like Cara Delevingne. Us mortals are left to achieve perfect brows through eyebrow pencils. A common mistake is that we tend to draw harsh lines in our quest for bold brows. The trick is to draw short, quick strokes, and blend with the eyebrow brush. Make sure your brow pencil is two shades lighter than the color of your hair.
MISTAKE #5 EYELINER
Remember the basics: dark colors shrink and recede, while light colors advance and bring forward. Skipping black eyeliner can help reveal the natural light color that’s suitable for daytime make up. But if you really can’t help wearing eyeliner, brown eyeliner is the best substitute—not too light and not too dark. But be careful, especially during hot summer days. Pencil eyeliner can be messy once it sets. Better to use liquid eyeliner so that it gives a matte and easy-dry finish.
Makeup can be quite tricky, that’s why it’s important to know how to properly apply them so you can maximize their use. The next time you grab a makeup item, do a bit of research. It never hurts to be too sure. Go ahead and play around with your makeup, ladies.
